Guards", and the ones with the blue flags are "Soldiers".  The Spanish-style
sets are called "Imperial Armada".

Fibblesnork calls the Armada minifigs "Conquistadors", which is probably a
good name for them.  The old red coats look to me like British Marines and
are the only pirate minifigs I would personally refer to as soldiers. :)

Well that's me anyway.  I blame Lego for overusing the word Imperial. :P
