Unintended irony alert! Unintended irony alert!
The humor value of the Afghans referring to *any* office as a
"Czar" is really, really high. :D (Mamluke/Momaluke is also an
Egyptian term, which refers to a slave class that seized power
in Egypt and ruled it for the Ottoman Empire--and the Mamlukes
were, in fact, slaughtered around 1805 or so by the separatist
Ottoman governor, whose name was...Mohammed Ali. Interesting if
unintended commentary on Afghanistan's ruling classes and the
way they eat themselves.)
Over here in the YooEss, the joke is that they're going to
cut off our supply of convenience store clerks. The cab
drivers are generally African, West Indian, or Russian much
more often than they're Muslim.
By the way, has PM Howard sent off those SAS fellows yet?
Terribly nice of Australia to send them over--how often do
they get to go out for combat missions (I don't consider the
East Timor thing "combat," really)?
best
