Thanks for all the info Deidre. I'm looking to start up in Mindstorms over
the next few months, then maybe 9V trains after that. Any expert advice on
the following menus would be great:

Mindstorms:
*RIS 1.5 at Dick Smith/Ozbricks for ~$290,
supplemented with
*Ultimate accessories for ~$100
*current supply of System and mid-80s Technic, maybe another pneumatic
tow-truck (bring on the 25% off sale TRU!!)
*sensors, motors from LA as required

For all these, I'd definitely watch ebay & trading post. I paid full price for
my first RIS, but all since then I got for a lot less. Though ebay is a lot
less inviting with the dollar so low...

I'm pretty keen to go MISB, but I wouldn't mind a few extra RCXs to test
their group behaviour modelling. What condition were sets in the secondhand
market?
Are the "Ultimate Accessories" worth $100?

Also, try & find a RIS 1.0 - the power in socket is really handy while
programming.

Trains:
*4565 Freight Railway ~$290
*4548 regulator ~$60
*4531 points (if I can find them) ~$50
*4515 straights ~$25
*a couple of small sets to build up the supply of wagons and crew ~$40

Is 4565 as nifty as it looks?

(...) Mine arrived yesterday, and I think it's pretty nifty indeed! I must caution that this is my first System train set, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, actually I'm not even sure what counts as features to start describing it :) (...)
