I bought the Model Team 5561 in KMart in Brisbane a few weeks ago,
but I think the price was higher, about $69 (or maybe $79).

Even at that price, I thought it was a good deal. The 5561's got lots
of pieces, so takes a while to build (which is good -- I like something
that takes me a few sessions).

It looks quite realistic, and has a nice rack-n-pinion steering system
(controlled from a roof-mounted knob) for the mechanically-minded.
Despite the realistic look, the parts are pretty much standard Lego
pieces that you can reuse in other creations. Even the purely ornamental
bits are mostly reusable ornamental bits (antennas and headlamps and so
forth). So, it's good value even just as spare parts.

The engine block is purely decorative and not connected to the wheels
(although it would be interesting to pull out the engine block and try
to install a motor to drive the rear wheels -- I can't think how to
drive the front wheels given the steering system).

The second model in the instructions is OK, but doesn't use all that
many of the parts and so is a lot quicker to build. It too has a nice
steering system (controlled from the steering wheel).

Probably the only things I would say against it are both pretty minor:

* the big balloon tyres are just a bit too big for the wheel cavity and
they can snag against the wheel arch if you turn it too sharply. If you
have some *slightly* smaller tyres, you might like to try them.

* there are some stickers across multiple pieces so you have to agonise
about whether you will put them on or not

So, if the price is now even cheaper, I'd say rush in and buy them, whether
for your own pleasure or for gifts. I'm certainly considering buying some
more to use as Christmas/birthday gifts if I can find them at $59.

Play well!

Kerry

(...) It was $ 69 AUD , but that was two months ago , I'm not too sure what date it came down. It's definitely $ 59 AUD in the two K-Marts I have seen it stocked in. I have seen single 5561's in toy shops but for around $ 160 AUD recently. K-Mart (...) (25 years ago, 30-Mar-00, to lugnet.loc.au)

(...) Actually, I got one of these <set:5561> at KB toy for just under $40. It's the only one I've ever seen there, but you should check it out if you have a KB Toy in your locality. (For the record, I have no association with KB Toy, but I am one (...) (25 years ago, 29-Mar-00, to lugnet.loc.au)
