While reading this mornings Herald-Sun [melbourne newspaper], I saw an
artical about 'beating the GST' with regards to internet
purchases...Apparently Customs don't charge import duties when the total for
duties and taxes is less than $50. The examples they gave were:
Clothes $140
Shoes $195
CD's, software, books $499
[clothes and shoes have a lower upper limit than the other areas because of
import duties]

Also, the total value of the goods must be less than $1000 if sent via Aus
Post, or $250 via another courier.

What this would seem to mean is that we can collectively order up to $499
[1] [or at least have the equivalent amount put on the customs labels] of
Lego from overseas [2], and not have to worry about import costs, etc.

Anyway, it's just a thought...

[1] I'm assuming here that lego/toys come under the same category as books,
cd's, etc.

[2] Eg, we all put our orders with one Aus Lugnetter [along with payment]
who then arranges for someone in the US/Europe to purchase these sets
[minifig packs come to mind] These sets are then sent to the person who
ordered them, and they are sent out to whoever ordered them from there. This
would allow us to purchase a reasonable amount of lego not currently
available in Australia, without everyone having to pay a high postage
amount.
