As a regular poster both here and on FBTB (I know, Ahui, you regularly read
FBTB too) I would disagree with the premise that Lugnet is for adults and
FBTB for children. I recently posted a poll over there as to whether people
preferred Original Trilogy versus Episodes 1 and 2 Star Wars sets based on
age (my thought was that adults would prefer OT while kids would prefer the
newer movie sets, it turned out that OT was overwhelming across ages).
Anyway, from the people that responded in that thread, I counted 26 under 20
years old and 18 20 and over. Granted, not a scientific poll by any means,
but it's not like the kids outweighed the adults by such a huge margin (most
of the adults were 20-something, though, so I might classify them as kids).
Certainly all of the administrators there are late-20's early-30's. They do
closely watch things to be kid-friendly (language etc), but I think that's
completely appropriate on a Lego forum. Turning attention to Lugnet, I've
conversed here with many teenagers. Eg a new poster on .castle just
mentioned that he is 14, and this sparked a conversation about the relation
of Legos to parents.
Anyway, why is there more Jake on FBTB than there is on Lugnet? Well, of
course it is up to him to answer that, but I'd say the more tightly
moderated forum there makes it a friendlier place for him. Some have said
that Jake is "doted on" over there. I would agree that when Tim first
opened up the "Ask Lego" forum there was some initial gushing. And there
tend to be thank-yous for answered questions. Also threads are supposed to
be locked down over there after getting answered, so there is less
opportunity for a series of complaints tacked onto a reply by Jake. That
doesn't add up to doting in my book, but maybe does in some's eyes.
One other thing. I've never understood the idea that one forum "competes"
with another. Different forums have different uses. Lugnet allows us to
bring together discussion of all lines. 1000steine.de serves a more
European (and German speaking) population. FBTB, Galactic Brick, and others
focus their attention on the Star Wars sub-culture. The Bricklink boards
focus on buying and selling. I think there are some boards dedicated to
brick films. Etc. That's a good thing, not a bad thing. As much as I love
Lugnet, it's not like Moses came down from the mountain and annointed it as
the official place for all of AFOLdom to come together. Most people, I
would assume, read and post in various different forums. And if LD posts an
answer to a question in one forum, it's not like it is preventing others
from reading and discussing those answers. I'm not saying that Suz was
saying any of this. The "competition" vibe was just something I picked up
while reading through this thread.

| (...) WOW... and then I wonder why Lego only post 'marketing-related' stuff here (lugnet). We (adults) can WORSE than the kids on FBTB. Over there when LD says it can't answer, the general felling is okay we understand. Here, if Lego doesn't answer (...) (22 years ago, 6-Jun-02, to lugnet.lego.direct)
