Actually, I believe the style from that vintage would have been torsos
with no tabs at all...

(...) In 1986? No way. The tabs were around before 1983 (or started that year), as I had never seen the tabless torsos until I picked up a used copy of 6390 Main Street. Now that I think about it, I have some older sets I never noticed "missing" (...) (23 years ago, 14-Jun-01, to lugnet.lego.direct)
