I'm weighing in here on Frank's post because I think he's onto some good ideas.
I think Todd is on to some good ideas, too, and here's why I think so.
The beauty of .lego.direct is that it is a place where we *know* TLC (LD) is
listening. Unfortunately, this NG has become very noisy with so much drivel that
it almost makes it not worth monitoring (from my POV). And it makes it harder
for LD to monitor as well. This NG definitely needs shaping up. I like the idea
of having specific places where I *know* direct communication between AFOLs and
TLC takes place.
Having said that, I think that Todd is over-reacting to the idea that TLC is
conducting too much official business inside of LUGNet. When I see Jake making
an announcement about a discontinued set, or Tomas updating info on Bionicle, I
see it as a *service* to fans of their products, not attempts to increase sales.
TLC would do just fine thank you very much if LUGNet disappeared tomorrow. As
others have said, we are already hooked on their product, so why would they
bother to "preach to the choir"? It doesn't wash if you think it is about money.
Although TLC is a huge and impersonal corporation, it has a very human face--
LEGO Direct. I have met these folks and they are good people. And they really
*do* love the brick and have reached out to AFOLs in a gesture of cooperation and
good will. Yeah, I know it's not completely altruistic, but it's not "just
business", either. We have a situation here that I'm not sure could be any more
ideal-- heck, we've got the ear of a vice-president at TLC for crying out loud!!!
In sum, I like the idea of knowing where I will be able to find correspondences
from LD, and I intensely dislike the idea of alienating them in any way (perhaps
this whole matter might have been resolved between Todd and LD off-line?). As
much as I think Billund is clueless in terms of marketing strategy, I think LD is
nuts on. And although LD represents TLC, they are doing their own thing in terms
of marketing and whose efforts should be supported by us, because they are trying
to give us what we want (for a change). I happen to believe that the success of
LD will be the ultimate rudder to steer TLC back on course.
Now it's back to building (with the 1,000s of bulk bricks I have ordered from
LD:-)
