As Janey said. Artificial stone. Looks like stone, feels like stone, heavy
as stone. I got one of the smaller boxes from the factory as thanks for my
CAD program, and I was very intrigued when I got a message from the post
office about a quite small package weighing over 6 kg.
The stones are nice to touch, and there is no interlocking or clicking.
Everything is just put on top of each other.

The material.
Maybe that they were (probably) the first 'structured' toy, you could always
buy just another 'complimentary' set to get the same pieces as in the next
bigger one. Already in 1890!
And the creator understood AFOA:s too: you could buy bulk, and even get
custom parts.
One other thing is the *smell* of them :-) Linseed oil has a very noticeable
smell, and that is part of the experience.
But of cousre it cannot compete with Lego!
