Well it looks like (based on the NYC Toy Fair) that TLG is celebrating 50 years
of the "Lego System of Play".
When if first came out in 1955 "Lego System of Play" was "Lego system i leg" in
Danish. 1955 also happens to be the first year that Lego was sold in another
country besides Denmark, and that was Sweden where it was "Lego system i lek".
The first Lego system was the Town Plan, which was the 1955 launch of the system
of play.
There were 44 new 1955 Lego elements that came out with the Town Plan.
They were:
2x2 quarter circle and 2x4 half circle macaroni bricks (4 different pieces).
1x6 and 1x8 beams (no posts underneath back then).
8 different 1:87 metal wheeled trucks.
16 different flat bottomed road signs.
5 different flat bottomed trees and 1 bush.
3 piece garage kit (1 garage baseplate, 1 garage door frame, 1 garage door).
5 different plates (waffle bottom back then), 2x8, 4x8, 4x8 right curve, 4x8
left curve and 6x8.
Today only 6 of these 44 items are still in production. The others are retired.
These 6 pieces now celebrate 50 years of production. They are:
1x6 beam
1x8 beam
2x2 macaroni brick (with missing notch of plastic on the base)
2x8 plate
4x8 plate
6x8 plate
And this is also the 50th anniversary of Lego in Sweden.
Happy 50th Birthday!

P.S. In 2006 Lego will be celbrating 50 years in Germany, Belgium and
Netherlands. Stuff you'll be reading about in the Lego CD.
