How rare is this part in each color?

Not really answering your question, but for the longest time I had no idea what
this piece looked like.  Even the picture on Peeron was a LDRAW picture, and I
still couldn't imagine its shape!  But now, Peeron has a photograph of the part
so I can finally realize what this part is.  Although complicated, it CAN be
recreated from 3 other pieces as Gerhard pointed out, which I guess explains why
this part became phased out (so is this the first case of de-juniorization?).

Anyhow, it's amazing what the LEGO parts designers first came up with, resulting
in a wonderful roof "system".  I just wish they would expand it to more colours
than just black and red[1] (the full complement of parts MAY exist in other
colours, but are not readily available).

I'm way off topic!

[1] Black and red happen to be the only colours in which I have enough resources
to build a large, fully detailed roof.

A (nearly) complete roof system is available in blue, yellow and white, and
possibly gray.  They can be purchased on Bricklink.  Some parts, such as the
yellow 1x2 double/inverted (what I used to call the "gable connector") are only
rarely available.

I agree with you Bryan, it was amazing at what TLG came up with to complete the
roof system.  This was in 1958, soon after TLG released the modern Lego bricks
with tubes underneath.  Without the tubes, the sloped brick system (45 degree
anyway) would not be possible.

Back then TLG did a good job of coming out with "complete systems" for their
products.  The new (1957) classic windows/doors (9 window styles, 1 door style),
was the 4th complete window/door system that TLG produced since 1949.

In modern years Lego doesn't seem to do "complete systems " anymore as regards
to related Lego items.  For example, when the low sloped (33 degree) roof parts
came out in the early 70's, TLG only created 4 parts (2x3, 4x3, 2x2 peak, 4x2
peak).  That worked fine until 1980 when they came out with the 3x3 double
convex piece (as well as the 3x3 and 1x3 low slope).  That piece doesn't have
any roof ridge counterpart.  A low slope (as well as a 2x2x3 steep slope
counterpart) double concave piece is sorely needed to help improve these
incomplete systems.

Like I was saying, "complete systems" are no longer available in many areas of
Lego constructions.  Log bricks are another example.  Why can't TLG create a 1x1
log brick, as well as a 2x2 "L" double convex and double concave log brick (as
well as a 1x1 outside corner log brick).

There has not been a "complete window system" since the end of the classic
window era in 1987.  The end started in the early 70's, but about half of the
classic windows continued until 1987, when all but the 1x2x2 classic windows
were discontinued.  What makes this even more lamentable is the fact that the
classic windows as we know them were the 4th (and final) complete system for
windows/doors that TLG came out with. The first window system (1949-56) had 1
door and 4 window styles.  The second (1953-56) had 1 door and 5 window styles,
the third window system (1955-56) had 1 door and 6 window styles.  And they all
matched!  Today we are stuck with 1 classic window, 4 door styles (that don't
match) and 3 other window styles that don't match.  Just getting the different
windows with the same tint to the glass is impossible, since some are only made
with a glass tint, while others are only made without a tint.

Another lament....
