Not really answering your question, but for the longest time I had no idea what
this piece looked like. Even the picture on Peeron was a LDRAW picture, and I
still couldn't imagine its shape! But now, Peeron has a photograph of the part
so I can finally realize what this part is. Although complicated, it CAN be
recreated from 3 other pieces as Gerhard pointed out, which I guess explains why
this part became phased out (so is this the first case of de-juniorization?).
Anyhow, it's amazing what the LEGO parts designers first came up with, resulting
in a wonderful roof "system". I just wish they would expand it to more colours
than just black and red[1] (the full complement of parts MAY exist in other
colours, but are not readily available).
I'm way off topic!

[1] Black and red happen to be the only colours in which I have enough resources
to build a large, fully detailed roof.

| (...) A (nearly) complete roof system is available in blue, yellow and white, and possibly gray. They can be purchased on Bricklink. Some parts, such as the yellow 1x2 double/inverted (what I used to call the "gable connector") are only rarely (...) (20 years ago, 26-Nov-04, to lugnet.general)
