Actually, in ye olden days, Lego tried to gain a foothold in the
architectural model market by starting to sell (Tata!) plates. Did you
ever stuble over a grey plate 8x11 (yes, eleven), Peeron part No. 728?
This plate, together with a transparent hollow "brick" of 8x11x3 (height
estimated) formed a box for extra plates and propably bricks. There have
been starter sets back then, containing bricks, plates, slopes, windows,
doors and trees, marketed towards architects to make them build the
models for their customers with Lego, and they introduced the plates as
a way to add more detail to the models.
So, once upon a time, Lego actually wanted to have AFOLs. Today it
sometimes seems to me they would like to get rid of us, though...
Yours, Christian
