They were made out of a softer plastic for three basic reasons, according to my
Toy Fair showroom guide: less expensive parts (this is a big concern for toys
that are really only intended for a very small age-range, since parents won't
want to invest large sums of money into baby toys), no sharp edges (imagine a
little kid falling on a pile of them if they were hard ABS!), and so that really
young kids can disconnect them (remember, not only will really young kids have
less grip strength than adults, but those bricks are huge compared to the hands
they were intended for).

For AFOL's thinking about using QUATRO as filler in Lego System MOC's, forget
it. Softer plastic, a little difference in colors, low gripping power, it's
just not going to work. Keep with DUPLO for filling.

QUATRO might still be useful for underlying support, but you'd still need to use
DUPLO to transition from QUATRO to System bricks because the QUATRO studs are
way too huge to lock into any standard System pieces.  It'd be kinda like trying
to attach 1x1 System bricks to the top of DUPLO studs.

Hi, Just got set 5356, the medium sized Quatro bucket. And it's correct, the bricks are made of softer plastic (and they look VERY MUCH like MB's pre-school bricks!). In fact, the plastic is so soft, that the bricks have very little gripping power. (...) (20 years ago, 10-Jun-04, to lugnet.quatro, lugnet.general)
