Curt,
I'm doing something similar but with the 9V light system.

The Electric Light Brick 4.5V 2x2 hooked up to a larger battery box that
used 3 "C" cell batteries.
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=bb45c01 .

The connection is made using a 4.5 wire with a two prong connector.

The connecting wires could be plugged into each other so you could increase
the length of the wire.

The lights and wires were packaged together in sets 816 & 970.

And the 12v train system also used them as lamps:

Overall, the 4.5 light system worked pretty well. And as I remember, they
were bright. I have not plugged them in recently, so they may not be as
bright as I thought they were. But they worked out well for houses because
you could easily attach the 2x2 brick to the underneath of a roof. The
bottom of the brick was also clear so light would shine down as well as out
the front.

See http://library.brickshelf.com/scans/0000/0970-1978/ for more pictures.

I recently purchased a set of the newer 9V "Light & Sound" light bricks and
they did not seem as bright as I hoped they would be.

Personally I would love to see Lego issue additional style light bricks that
are a bit more flexible than the older 9V bricks. I'm trying to figure out
the easiest way to anchor the 1x2 with top light to the roof of a building
or use it as a street lamp.

Does anyone know if the little lights in the 9V bricks can be replaced? Do
they burn out or dim? They do seem to dim when more lights are added to the
same power supply.

Hope this helps.

Bryan

Hello,
For those of you that have the Electric Light Brick 4.5V 2x2
(http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=08010b), I have some • questions.
I'm going to buy lights for a model I'm making, and I wanted to get some • of
this kind of piece.

Here are my questions:
1. Is there actually a light bulb in there? It's hard to tell by the • picture.
2. What kind of battery box does it need?
3. Is it bright?

Thanks,
Curt

Thanks, Bryan, your information was all very helpful. I do have one more question, however, whic had forgotten to ask: how many lights to each (4.5V) battery box? Thanks for you help, Curt (...) (22 years ago, 11-Apr-03, to lugnet.general)
