In my opinion this is a direct copy....

So you guys that are saying this is no big deal are basically saying all
MOCs are fair game?  This makes me want to go through all of your galleries
and pick one of your creations, copy it as best I can, and sell it.  No big
deal right?

The selling of work created by others is wrong.

Having said that...
I have copied many creations by other people.  That is where I get 90% of my
ideas.  Right now I have 2 buildings on my Train/Town layout that are almost
exact copies of buildings done by MichLug members and used in a recent public
show. I plan to use them for a public show, too, next month.  I have not asked
permission and don't think I have to.  When people ask me about what I have
built, I almost always reply that I stole the ideas from other builders.

The pictures on Brickshelf are in the public domain.  I think it is fine to
copy whatever you want for non-commercial purposes.  I am a massive picture
pirate and have collected many thousands of pictures from Brickshelf and other
websites over the years.  When I am looking for ideas, I browse the archives I
have saved and make a color print out of what I want to copy.  Then I set to
work making my own version.

There is an old adage that goes
"Imitation is the highest form of flattery"
And this is an idea that I subscribe to in regards to Lego.

Most people who post MOC pictures online are proud of what they have built and
what to show it off.  To expect that some of these ideas would not be copied by
someone else is ridiculous.  For myself, I do not consider myself an idea man,
but I can implement what others have come up with.  So I get good sucess by
copying and often improving upon what others have already tried.

If this bothers some people, I say "Too Bad."
In the sprit of Lego toys, I think copying others ideas is perfectly fine.
However, doing it as a money-making venture is very wrong and copying someone's
work in order to sell the results is bad news.

(...) Yes. (...) I think as long as you don't claim they are your designs, that's fine. Permission shouldn't be necessary, but it would be nice as a kind gesture to the person who designed the model to let them know. (...) They are most certainly (...) (22 years ago, 28-Dec-02, to lugnet.general)
