Peeron will do this. It has a color table for each element (which may be
surpressed if it is too big but there is a link to see it if this is the
case) which shows you which year and in what colors an element was
available. By clicking on the color table you can see which sets contained
a particular element. I was using this very feature today - it is extremely
useful.
Now if you don't know what it is you are looking for by the proper name you
might want to start with PartsRef (http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/) first
so you can visually see the parts (wouldn't a link from PartsRef to Peeron
be great?). You can browse the Peeron parts list as well - most of the
parts have an image reference (click on the "ref" link).
