Were Parts Packs available in US stores?

I remember as a child when I went to my neighborhood toy store in the
1960's they had the Samsonite Supplemental Parts Packs.  Today most toy
stores may have some base/road plates, and that's about it as much as
they carry in supplemental items.

I remember back in the early 1980's when I was scavenging the toy stores
of metro Detroit for older (70's) LEGO.  One thing I remembered about
that time was that no parts/service packs were available in TRU or any
other toy stores.  But in 1983 I spent 3 months (for my job) in central
New Jersey.  So I scoured the toystores from Somerville to the Jersey
Shore.  In Somerville there was a toystore called SKYLAR's, which had
one thing real peculiar.  It was that they carried the boxed parts packs
for red regular sloped and low sloped bricks (dated early '80s).

This might be the only time in the last 20 years of searching for LEGO
in the USA that I've actually come across the parts pack in a retail
establishment.

Whenever I travelled to Europe, I always come across parts/service packs
in toystores.  But only in this one store in central New Jersey did I
come across any of them in the USA.

It makes me wonder why this one store carried them, and no other US one
(that I've seen) has.

Just curious,

Gary Istok

I remember finding roof parts packs in a store here in Vancouver in the early 90's, when my daughter was into building large houses and we always needed (still need!) more roof bricks. That store no longer has them, of course: don't know when they (...) (26 years ago, 12-Mar-99, to lugnet.general)

Hi all, This is my first post to LUGNET but I ahve been lurking on and off around here for a few months now. Sometime around 1979-1982 I was building some sort of building and I needed more red roof slope pieces. My dad asked my mom to take me out (...) (26 years ago, 12-Mar-99, to lugnet.general)

I remember finding tree, flower and sign parts packs in an independent toystore in Kansas City. It had to be in the early 80's. The store was in a mall that was in Crown Plaza. Bryan Gary Istok wrote in message <36E93EAE.1EC3E0A4@u...ch.edu>... (...) (26 years ago, 12-Mar-99, to lugnet.general)
