It's doubtful the packaging had any effect at all on the yellowing. All
ABS LEGO bricks, white or otherwise colored, should yellow eventually,
simply because of the heat-molding process used to make them. That
initial heating process obliterates a certain amount of hydrogen atoms
in the ABS, leaving open carbon bonds exposed on the surface to attract
whatever sort of atoms happen to be floating by. UV exposure from
sunlight merely accelerates an inevitable process. Unless they started
sealing LEGO in airtight argon-filled polybags, and packaged them in
UV-blocking boxes, the parts would still yellow, in the box or otherwise.

Also, I've got plenty of old bricks which are not yellowed, so there definitely are differing effects. One factor in the yellowed 2x4 bricks situation (...) | An experience yesterday, and all the hubub recently about the declining quality of LEGO bricks got me thinking a bit about quality... Yesterday I opened an older MISB set (3629 to be specific). It was almost impossible to build because the bricks (...) (24 years ago, 2-Mar-01, to lugnet.general)
