Suzanne,
You beat me to the punch! I was going to post a message about this. We have
just launched a sub site of LEGO.com (www.lego.com/INmotion) that details
this vehicle concept.
The concept is really cool, and *no* the car is not made out of LEGO! :) If
you are familiar with the Eddie Bauer edition of the Ford Expedition, you
will understand the INmotion concept. Basically, the interior of this
vehicle is created to help create excitement, education, and play value for
road travel. With family time increasingly being spent in the car, LEGO and
Johnson Controls partnered to create this concept to improve the quality of
time spent in the car.
For a better look at the car, there is a Quicktime VR movie that allows a
full 360 view of the interior, take a look at the "360 View" of the INmotion
web site: www.lego.com/inmotion
To answer a few questions in advance:
1. Is this project taking resources away from the development of LEGO brick
based toys?
- No. This project involves a licensing agreement with Johnson Controls for
the actual production. Johnson Controls brings the experience of developing
high quality vehicle interiors, while LEGO will provide the solid
understanding of play value.
2. What is the benefit of this project to LEGO?
From the Press Release:
"The Johnson Controls LEGO INmotion concept vehicle is a creative and
innovative new approach to family travel. Parents have long sought to find
new and absorbing ways in which to keep children engaged on long journeys by
road."
What better way to cement LEGO's fun and engaging values in the mind of a
child than to turn what has typically been a long, boring road trip into an
opportunity to play and learn? (Remember the Simpsons, "Are we there yet?"
"No!" "Are we there yet?" "No!") Once the child gets out of the INmotion
vehicle, they take the LEGO toys and enjoyment with them!
3. I want one now! When can I buy one?
- The vehicle concept was officially launched last weekend at the Detroit
Auto Show. Depending on the response, which so far as been overwhelmingly
good, the decision will be made to put it into production.
I am not positive of when the actual "on the street" date is. I will let you
all know when I know.
4. How can I help get this concept into production?
- On the INmotion web site (www.lego.com/INmotion), there is a section
called "Help Design It". This will lead you to a form to answer a few
questions about your interest in the vehicle itself, as well as certain
individual features. Please fill out the survey and let LEGO and Johnson
Controls know what you think. The more the responses, the more the likely
the concept will get pushed through.
I hope I have answered all the questions in advance, but please let me know.
Personally, I thought it was a great concept, but now that I have actually
seen it, I want one, and I don't even have kids!
