More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

----Note: FUT: lugnet.year.2001 (I figure this is probably the best place but feel free to change :)---- ...Sorry if this has been discussed but I was pondering today on the subject of the LEGO catalogs. We've all yakked lots about how LEGO designs (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jan-01, to lugnet.general, lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) I tend to agree with you for the most part but I do have some complaints. The 2001 catalog has some nice scenes. Take for example the Alpha Team, the heir to the town throne (or so it seems): (URL) how about Life on Mars with their nice (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) EXACTLY. This ought to go in dear LEGO, don't you think. The catalogs have gotten plain BORING. I scan through my collection of catalogs (catalogs mean TOYS!) at least once every three days and find myself WISHING that I could go back to 1991! (...)   Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) Okay, fair enough, I agree that the 2001 catalog has some pretty effects and pictures and stuff, but IMHO, they're still nothing compared to much of the old ones....I find the "cut and paste" nature of the pictures kind of cheap (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

wow, I never noticed that before, but yeah it seems like the catalogs have gone way down in quality too. Jeeze I remeber buying sets just to try and recreate the scenes in the catalogs. That harbor scene is like the coolest one though. Matt Marshall (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

Well speaking of old catalogs... Can anybody point me in the direction of the holiday 98 catalog? There is directions on how to build a trailer for set#3442 - the legoland truck (at least that what it says in the box). I looked for it on brickbay - (...) It isn't any of these:? (URL) -TiM (...) (23 years ago, 5-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

I do not think so, that was the very first place I looked. I would say I looked at over 90% of those, my eyes started to throb after a while, lol. thanks though. Mark (...) (23 years ago, 6-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) I know this has little to do with the original message, of which I fully agree with, but I must mention something. In the only magazine example I didn't remove, I believe I can see Captain Ahnee! Yes, this is strange, but I really think the (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) Sorry to have to post again, but what is that car/vehicle lift in that picture? Is that a real set, or just a one-time Lego piece to fit in with the scene? Does anyone know? (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality.... [long]

(...) I believe that it and the shell gas station on the baseplate next to it were all part of one set, the metro park and service tower. (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)

Lego cutting plates in Catalogue Dioramas (Was and part of it still is Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality... [long])

(...) See this page in the same catalogue. (URL) lift is made using a rack and cog that also came in the big Ice Planet ship and the Europort Container Base. In all there catalogues, the dioramas always only used sets that could be purchased (I (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.general, lugnet.town)

Re: Lego cutting plates in Catalogue Dioramas (Was and part of it still is Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality... [long])

(...) Basically they only used available sets (especially when it comes to buildings/structures, but I believe adding minifigs and sometimes misc vehicles etc. was not uncommon. (URL) and plates are of course added, minifigs are added, and I think (...) (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.town)

Re: Lego cutting plates in Catalogue Dioramas (Was and part of it still is Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality... [long])

(...) That little blue car is actually the blue car from the service tower set. Look closely at it and you will see the exact same one in the picture at the base of the car lift. Kyle Henneberque (23 years ago, 7-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.town)

Re: Lego cutting plates in Catalogue Dioramas (Was and part of it still is Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality... [long])

(...) Top marks Nicholas! No I didn't know this, but suddenly one of my heretical pursuits is considerably less heretical. Admittedly I don't tend to cut up roadplates (haven't got enough of those), I cut up grey baseplates to make ship decks, but (...) (...) I think you meant the Ice Planet base... (...) They also did so in the UK catalog scene above... Notice the road between the police station and the garage (car park) is separated from the 3 prong driveway by 2 studs.   Re: Lego cutting plates in Catalogue Dioramas (Was and part of it still is Re: More on the decline of LEGO quality... [long])

(...) I stand corrected (as I suspected I might :) -- But I'm pretty sure they add extra minifigs still - and of course trees. (23 years ago, 9-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001, lugnet.town)

MANY THANKS to Michael Edwards!! He sent me the scan of the page I wanted from the catalog! I can not thank you enough. Also, many thanks go out to Tom Stangl - he was helping me also - lol - I got 2 emails almost at the same time, one from each of (...) (23 years ago, 10-Jan-01, to lugnet.year.2001)
