First, they are mailboxes, NOT safes!

Safes!

Just to jump in on this with a few thoughts:

I would not call them safes for two reasons:

  1. that is a fairly recent use of the part, it is much older than the • wild
west sets

  2. how many safes have you ever seen that have a slot almost large • enough
for a person to stick their hand into?

I'd be strongly inclined to call them mailboxes because of the slot, which
conveniently allows a 1x2 mail tile to be pushed through (of course it also
allows a money tile or gold coins to be put through).

Other things they could be called:

- lockers
- drop boxes (which includes mailboxes, but also think about your library • or
video store after hours drop box)
- refrigerators (though most refrigerators open from the side not the top)
- washing machine
- dishwasher

They also appeared in Classic Space as storage containers
of unspecified uses.  (eg <set:6844>)

You get the idea, they have lots of uses. I'd be curious as to what their
first use actually was for.

Same here.  I'm wondering if they first appeared in Town
specifically as a mailbox (my guess).

Okay, I'm home now, so this will thread [sorry about the message from work.]

The part was first used both for a letter-box in town and trains:
6362, 6372, 6374[1983], 6651, 7824[1983]

And then for a storage box in space:
6823[1983], 6844[1983], 6930[1983], 6951[1984], 6980 [1983]

Also, it was released in 1982 I believe. [all sets listed above were shown
in a 1984 european in-box catalogue or 1983 Australian full-range catalogue,
and I believe were released in 1982 unless otherwise noted.]

It's first use as a safe wasn't until 1996 [unless you count the use of it in
set 1490 [released in 1990] as a safe :) ]

Personally I think it should be categorised as either a post-box [first use]
or storage container [covers safe, post-box, and any other uses it might
have.] but not being from the group this started in, my opinion [Australian]
probably doesn't count :)

Anyway, hope this helps settle your argument :) and enlightens you a little
more about the history of this part.

(...) OK <grumble> Since their first use was mailboxes, I guess I'll let you call them that, ;-) but probably the best would be the more generic "container" or 2x2x2 container box" that the LDraw reference uses: (URL) (24 years ago, 21-Aug-00, to lugnet.general, lugnet.org.ca.nalug)
