     Why the difference? Probably due to the fact that if it gets stuck in someone's throat there's a good chance they'll still be able to breathe (like pen-lids) - It also makes them easier to remove (Getting the non-hole heads of my classic spacemen is (...)       (...) You do realise that the "hole" in question is in the stud on top of the head, right? Early ones have solid studs- like on a brick. Later ones have "holes" in the stud- the stud is hollow.       (...) ...FWIW, the hollow stud does have one advantage, thin round things (like things a minifig can hold: spears, light saber blades, lances), they can stick into the new head hole... so the new head hole is a bit more functional than the old solid (...)      Scott, (Ah, I love that name ; ) ) (...) They are all interchangeable. Maybe I am missing what you are asking. All sets, minifigs, etc. before 1993, 1994 have the heads without holes.
