Juniorization of other themes?

Hold onto your hats: palm trees are now THREE PIECES.

I picked up the River Expedition set, and was very annoyed to make this
discovery.  There is a one-piece trunk with base, a one-piece four-frond top,
and a standard round green tile to hold the latter on.  The leaves are made of
thin, soft plastic, to boot.

It's bad enough to see Lego making up new, large, low-reusability parts, but to
see such pieces *replace* an existing solution is disheartening.  The savings
must really be substantial for them to go to this route.

I expect to see another round of "Lego's too expensive" claims as the 99 sets
get around.  For the first time, I may be in agreement: I really like the River
Expedition set (nice design, nice parts), but at $50 I really have to question
where the money is going.

This makes me wonder about the costs of the Star Wars sets.  Lucasfilm
licensing fees are quite hefty.  I sincerely hope other themes aren't paying
the price for that license.

BTW-- I have to wonder if the new, thicker boxes for some of the sets (even the
little dune buggy set comes in a chunky box) aren't a ploy to make the sets
seem more substantial in the store...

(...) Pigs must be flying because I never thought I would defend Town Jr. However, I've always tried to get my nephews and nieces into Lego by buying them on Christmas and birthdays. I found they would get frustrated with the directions though. Town (...) (26 years ago, 14-Dec-98, to lugnet.general)
