In article <36758A03.9D1422FF@appstate.edu>, main@appstate.edu says...

I have been following the discussion on RTL about re-issuing older
sets. • [SNIP]
BUT, what if Lego were to come out with "meta
sets" aimed at the collector's market.  These sets would include a CD
with all the building instructions for a particular era's/theme's models
(e.g. LEGOLAND TOWN 1978-1985).
[SNIP]

Well, I don't see why they don't just make grab bags.  Why worry about shutting
off the molds after running 10,000 new (insert piece here)  Just let it run,
take what you need for your sets, and then you can take whatever pieces are
around and get them out there.

Why is this good?

A) Keep the machines running.  Maybe current capacity is maxed, but if you new
you could run the things more (less changes) and make money, why not opearte
this way?

B) People could not count on getting a piece from a grab-bag set, so if they
wanted a snake/rock element/mummy, etc, they'd have to get a set or get one
from somebody.  Well, if they get it from somebody, it was still sold as a set
(i.e. set sales don't go down)

C) Deflect this type of question by making sure that elements are out there.
You can legitimately say "We produced over 500,000 each of white, red, blue
and black (insert rare piece here) that were not in sets.  We are not
re-releasing these -- they are already available.  TLG can end production when
TLG doesn't need them any more.

D) Further the image of a thinking toy.  Sure, grab bags may not sell as well
as the Halloween or Anniversatry buckets (big win with Orange and Green), but
you won't have to make so many (and I've seen them on clearance) sets like the
black dragon, bat lord, samuri, pirate set that had a skeleton, and skeleton
suprise.  Sure, people wanted the guys, but I saw tons on the shelfs.  If I
could look at a clear bag and see a bunch of skeletons, tiles, plates, etc, I'd
be as inclined to buy over the sets with skeletons.

2 cents more from me.

(...) shutting (...) Why would they want to do that when they have us buying $30-$50 kits just to get a few of the parts we want? Robert Wallace robertw@netcom.com (26 years ago, 1-Jan-99, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)

I have been following the discussion on RTL about re-issuing older sets. I know this topic comes up often on RTL and I thought I might add what I think would be a new angle on it. Lego is unlikely to reissue sets for myriad reasons that have all (...) (26 years ago, 14-Dec-98, to lugnet.general, lugnet.dear-lego)
