I would love to have electronically operated valves to integrate with
the RIS. It is the one thing that would really make Lego pneumatics
more viable to me.

The expansion set is a good idea, as long as it is better thought out
than the mars one was, and actually adds additional capabilities to
the RCX.
I really hope it is not dead - It was the introduction of mindstorms
that really brought me back into buying Lego.
