I gotta say one thing in favor of flash in the pan fads:
LEGO clearances at Target and Wal-Mart.
I build up bigtime and don't spend as much as I would have 10-20 years ago.
Good for me.

When I was a kid (I'm 30 now, so this would be in the late 70's to mid 80's), there were only a few themes - Town, Space, Castle - that appealed to a 10-ish year old.
