From the very first basic sets of 1949, until 1965.... all Lego Basic Sets were nicely housed in flat boxes with all the elements displayed in checkerboard and zig-zag patterns. (...) I hear you, Danny...! Not only technic sets, most of the medium-large sized System sets also had the cellophane window highlighting some of the sets' parts. (...) You're right, the boxes are definitely way too big for their contents. But in addition to the billboard qualities of a large box, they also help justify the price.
