Certainly TLG can make old gray if it wanted to. The issue is why did it change the color. Multi-million dollar companies do not make significant changes on a whim and always consider (or should consider) the bottom line. As with most things in life, it’s hard to get identical results by doing things in two different ways. By changing the coloring method, I think by default you would get a slightly different color. TLG certainly could try to match the old color, but it’s quite plausible that matching the color would cost money, whereas the “easier” color might be cheaper. (For example, backward compatibility in computer software or hardware for instance takes effort, whereas starting from scratch as technology progresses is often easier and thus cheaper.) So I disagree with your statements.

Jake’s explanation of the “linearity” of the new colors sounds reasonable [1], but it is probably more of a function of the linearity of the standardly available dyes. The design lab probably thought they were killing two birds with one stone, making the colors cheaper and as a by-product (supposedly) linearizing the color palette.

[1] With how shifted toward blue the new colors seem, even this linearity explanation is suspect.

(...) Totally agreed. Money is the issue. (...) Doesn't sound reasonable to me. Explained below. (...) Agreed. The "linearity" esplanation - or should I say excuse - doesn't make any sense. If it was so, why did LEGO stop that "linearity" now? (...) (20 years ago, 26-Aug-04, to lugnet.color, FTX)

(...) There was a post about the purples- they were made in different countries (Hungary, Swiss and Danish, IIRC), and the dyes used are not from the same batch (or maker?) Anyway, the colours are different, because the dyes are different. The idea (...) (20 years ago, 21-Aug-04, to lugnet.color, FTX)
