Well, while a blue whale doesn't expend much energy to swim, it also doesn't
have the ability to change its metabolic rate. Also, the blue whale expends an
ENORMOUS amount of energy maintaining its body temperature. A mammal needs to
eat a lot if it wants to survive in freezing arctic waters, and since a blue
whale never stops swimming, it must constantly move and surface to breathe. A
land mammal doesn't need to eat near as much in a temperate climate where it
can sleep half the day or more away. Also, I'm almost positive that the
nutritional value of an equal amount of cow is much greater than that of krill,
a sea shrimp thats mainly shell and legs.
