Or they could have been protoypes of the pieces.

Highly unlikely. If you actually look at the date on the magazine, it's
1993... The 1st castle corner pieces came out in 1986 with Black Falcon's
Fortress (6074) (also premiered in the Guarded Inn (6067) that year, but not
in grey), which means that the prototypes would have had to be kicking around
for 7 years (probably more like 8 or 9 seeing as how prototypes for pieces are
created long before their public release) before they were used in the model.
I find it much easier to believe that they were misprinted pieces that got
sent to the model builders. Or I suppose it could have been built in plain
grey at which point someone suggested using a printed brick instead of the
plain, and stickers or digital enhancement was added.

Either of Dave's explanation makes sense... although we're assuming it was
actually built in 1993, and not an archive photo unearthed for this Castle
issue.  We're also assuming it's TLC's, although it ought to be since there are
no other credits.  I'd love to get my hands on some of those stickers!  By the
way, there's a half-arch (I think) covering the upper stones on the flat wall
at the lower right, so that explains their absence.  (I tried scanning it
larger, but the moire effect was unbanishable and rather ugly.)  I have been
examining the picture with a magnifying glass.  Those white blobs by the big
red flag are sheep!

I daresay those responsible never dreamed their tower would be the subject of
such scrutiny :-)

Cheers, Heather

(...) Hmm... I suppose... just seems odd that they'd dig for an old picture rather than just make a new one... (...) Although after the LUGNET logo fiasco in the Mania Magazine earlier this year, we know they're not great at giving credit! :) But (...) (24 years ago, 20-Sep-00, to lugnet.castle)
