Hello Everybody.

Today I invite you to travel back to a simpler time; a time before classic castle, space or even dark gray. We visit the world of a TFOL over 25 years ago. Yes, that teenager was me. I had already seen the usefulness of various sets for spare parts and had amassed a huge(1) collection including three of sets 565 Moon Landing and four sets of 371 Sea Plane plus further blue pieces from various sets. Plenty of castle goodness. Well, here’s a picture at long last:(2)

click for the gallery.

The blue seemed a reasonable stone colour partly due to it being relatively plentiful in useful shapes. You may note a few red accents in the design, neccessitated by a lack of those parts in blue. Indeed, the 1x8x2 arch has never yet been made in blue. You may also note a few modern additions: the coloured lanterns, the owl who recently took up residence.

On a side note you may also notice the use of 2 x 2 Double Concave Slope Bricks for corners in the crenellation. These were a compromise as I waited for the 2x2 corner brick to be invented.(3) Nine years later it was. But I wasn’t paying attention by that point. Now I keep the original slopes as part of the original charm.

This castle was one of the last things I completed before entering my dark age. The dark age was not as dark as some, since this castle has remained on display on one high shelf or another for all but three of the intervening years.

Enjoy and PLMKWYT.

Play well,

Ley Ward aka Professor Whateverly, who has yet to come up with a suitable .castle sigfig.

(1) Hey, this was the olden days, and I was young, so it seemed larger than it does now.

(2) Okay, some pictures have been up for a while, but this is the official post.

(3) Yeah, you youngsters don’t know how good you have it.

PS. Yes I know, there is rather an extreme amount of cantilevering, but I was going for height, real-world physics notwithstanding.

(...) Very nice - has that Classic Lego feel to it. I like the pic showing the real cobweb in the archway - very cool. (21 years ago, 10-Apr-04, to lugnet.castle, FTX)

Hey Prof, Welcome to .castle. This is a great creation and so much better when you consider this was done by a kfol with a limited palette before the advent of the internet. I really like the way it is all accessible, especially that staircase. Also (...) (21 years ago, 14-Apr-04, to lugnet.castle, FTX)
