The camera I use is a ~$200 dollar HP digital camera:

truly the way to go. it cuts down time it takes to do this by yards and yards.
My wife split it with me. Oh yeah, and re-chargable batteries are a MUST! I
go through a four pack each time I sit down to photograph.
As for light, tho, I use like a $15 dollar lamp with a 200 watt bulb with a 100
watt bulb in the ceiling as a filler. All in all its pretty inexpensive (aside
from the camera) to do it all.
I don't even use a tripod (evidence in the sometimes blurry close-ups), but
they aren't more than $20 at Wal-Mart. I already have one because i also do
fine art photography, but that's a different story.
Oh yeah, and I use a version of Photoshop for playing with the images. But,
uhh.. that wasn;t too expensive for me.
Hope this info helps. It really isn't too difficult to do and I'd love to see
other people's work!
