POV-Ray can use bitmaps as surface textures.  I've never done this myself, but I've seen it done.

For a project I am working on, I need a picture of a datapad (which I posted
to .models) with text displayed on its screen (and I don't mean a perfect
front view).  I rendered the model in POV-Ray, but have no idea of how to
get the text on it, mainly due to the perspective and foreshortening in the
rendering.

One idea I thought of was if there is indeed a DAT to AutoCAD converter out
there, I could turn the datapad file into AutoCAD format, import the text I
want, put that on the screen of the pad, and render it in AutoCAD.

So I have two requests:

(1) Is there a DAT to AutoCAD converter, and where can I get it?
(2) Can anyone think of an easier way to achieve the effect I want?

Any help appreciated!
