I'm no expert, but I'll take a crack at answering this one.
The radiosity setting allows for diffuse lighting, so instead of simulating one
or more light sources, it simulates ambient light, almost like outdoors.
I have used radiosity for some renders, and it works very nicely.
I can point you to some others who have used it very nicely too, including the
author of the Train Poster, Jeroen de Haan.

As for the settings, I believe Jeroen had some on his page,

but it's down at the moment.
From what I can recall, the big difference is in the settings for focal point,
aperture, blur_samples, and variance. Depending on your object, this will take
lots of playing around to get "just right", and even then, I still play around
to see what difference different settings make.
