As additional follow-up, both of these issues may be improved a bit if you use
the lugnet color files, assuming you were not already doing so. Theres an
option for this in the latest radiosity include file at www.digitalbricks.nl --
the lugnetcolors.inc file in that package can be used independently, too.

I've noticed this effect too, and I wonder if this doesn't have something to do with the Ldraw parts not being modeled as solids, so with transparent pieces you get some artifacts from the reflectivity of the inner and outer surfaces of the (...) (21 years ago, 23-Aug-03, to lugnet.cad.ray, FTX)
