Wow, that are some amazing pictures! Did you make them yourself?
I don't know if you can place an image on a skysphere, but you can place one
on a "normal" sphere and make it very big (and hollow! don't forget that!).

There is another thing to consider and that is that in these kind of
radiosity images, the skysphere serves as a lightsource [1]. That's why the
lighting and the shadows are so soft. I don't think you can increase the
density or intensity of a imagemap.
You can use the new "cust_inc" files; they contain a "c"-version that uses a
(light emitting) cloudy sky. Makes the images somewhat blue-er though.

[1] Normal white light in POV-Ray has an RGB value of <1,1,1>. To make the
skysphere (or any other object for that matter) emit light you have to
higher these values. In the "cust_inc" file they are 1.25.
