ok,

this was a miracle.  I went to the bar, came home and read the post to this
thread and scratched my head.  searched for a hex editor which i've never
even hear of... and found Hex Workshop demo.

these guys are great.  I ended this problem in an hour. btw here is the link
to the editor.

http://www.bpsoft.com

looking at the hex tables for the first time was weird.  I tried a right
click search for the number I was looking for an badabing badaboom... then
it was matter of deciding which table i should edit... what I ended up doing
was playing with the selection till I tried backing up the current element
table file and and cut the following line of text to remove part 3939.

..c.lg_3939..

saved under the real name and rendered with the correct results.  then cut
the following line to remove part 3942.

..f.lg_3942..

saved and it all rendered fine

thanks for everyones help

jeers to all of you that make me learn more than I expect...

hex what?

-tk

ps result comparison's coming soon
