This is a proposal for a new meta-statement/header line for parts files.
I'm hanging this off the pattern-id discussion, because it relates to
patterned parts.
The basic idea is this: right now, there are three ways to see if there is
a relation between two part files. The first way (for patterned parts) is
to look for a pppp.dat file to go with a ppppPxx.dat file. The second way
(for shortcut files) is to parse the shortcut file, and find the file(s)
referenced in the linetype 1 command(s). The third way is to look for
similar descriptive part names. If a part has the title "bbbbbbbbbbb with
yyyyy Pattern", there should be another part-file with title "bbbbbbbbbbb".
There should be a meta-statement which provides a simple, clear way to
relate one part-file to another part-file.
There are a couple of types of parts which could benefit from this
information. One type is patterned parts. Another type is the TLC
official number shortcut files.
The meta-statement would look like this:
0 BASE[:] <type> <base-part>
This meta-statement would appear in the header of certain parts which are
derived from another part. Only one meta-statement would appear in a
single part-file, and it could only reference one parent part. This would
allow for many derived parts to reference a single base part.
Any reactions to this?

Is the location/URL of this documentation readily available to *new* (or forgetful) LCAD authors? Lately, I answered several (...) (24 years ago, 21-Nov-00, to lugnet.cad.dev)

Rather than the suggestion of using alpha characters, in the "pattern number", have we considered allowing other characters in the sixth position - so we allow nnnnnp00-nnnnnp99 nnnnnq00-nnnnnq99, nnnnnr00-nnnnnr99, etc as valid patterned part (...)
