For this piece, the only measuring gear you need is some LEGO pieces. Check to
make sure the diameter & positioning of the clip is the same on both the old and
new pieces, and (assuming they are the same) modify the original file. The
current 4081.dat has a clip that is 8 LDU wide. For the older piece, the width
should be 4 LDU.
Also, you could replace the large block of quads at the end of the file with a
couple of references to ring3.dat.
