That's probably because your newsreader isn't set to wrap out-going messages or
it's line-wrapping is non-standard. The web interface may be able to
understand the protocol, but not all other newsreaders do. When the message is
replied to, it drops the protocol, resulting in everyone seeing it as a single
line.

P.S. Take this with a grain of salt, because most of my understanding of line
wrapping stems from the discussion that went on here a couple months ago.
