My answer would be, "sure why not..." Well, after a bit of thinking, why not,
ALL the patterned head parts would then need to be updated to the shape of the
torus(4 surfaces instead of 2).

If we were to undertake that challenge, this is the torii code we would use;

The following is for the patterned pieces, providing there is no pattern on the
torii surfaces.
1 16 0 4 0 0 0 -8 0 -6.4 0 -8 0 0 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 4 0 8 0 0 0 -6.4 0 0 0 -8 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 17 0 0 0 8 0 6.4 0 -8 0 0 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 17 0 -8 0 0 0 6.4 0 0 0 -8 t04o6250.dat

The following for sub-part(s);
1 16 0 4 0 0 0 8 0 -6.4 0 8 0 0 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 4 0 -8 0 0 0 -6.4 0 0 0 8 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 17 0 0 0 -8 0 6.4 0 8 0 0 t04o6250.dat
1 16 0 17 0 8 0 0 0 6.4 0 0 0 8 t04o6250.dat

Anyone up for a reply?

I count about 49 heads.  That's based on an out-of-date directory on my hard drive,
there may be a few more by now.

That's a lot of parts to update all in one go.  We've done it before, or at least
nearly; we redesigned the neck-mark on minifig torsos a while back.  This would be a
bigger deal, because some parts would have patterns that would change.

Also, there's an outstanding question of size - the Bionicle ball joint seems to have
the same diameter as the minifig head, but the parts are modeled with slightly
different sizes.  Are these two dimensions actually the same, or are they actually
different?  I have no calipers with which to check...

Here's a heretical suggestion: create the updated subfile as a new file, 3626bs02 or
something.  Updated 3626b*.dat parts can be changed to use the new subfile.  This
would relieve most of the coordination issues; updated heads could be released
whenever they were ready.  The two downsides of this approach: some heads may *never*
get updated and if all heads are updated, we'll have one (or two) more dead files
(the obsolete subfiles) floating around in the library.

Thought on updating parts with patterns on the rounded edges: write a script to
project the patterns from the old surfaces to the new surfaces.  It sounds kind of
scary, but I don't think it would be horribly difficult.

How's that reply?

Steve
