If it's not broke why fix it? I think the one on the PT is just fine.
The file size concern have gotten entirly out of hand.
Let's do some math:
Peeron has 3628 out of 5589 (64%) sets invertoried for a total of 8062 parts
(this includes Moved To parts).
The official library has 2582 parts, 344 subparts, and 212 primitives for a
total of 3138 files.
The size entire official library (35.3 MB) plus every part on the PT (17.0 MB)
(which includes quite a few part fixes from the official library) is 52.3 MB.
Using these numbers:
Assume 8062 is 64% of the total LEGO catalog in parts, this gives us 12597
parts. Alternatively you could find the average unique part per set and then
apply that to the entire LEGO catalog. This method yeilds ( (8062 / 3628) *
5589) 12419 parts. I'll use the larger of the 2 values to be conservative.
The average file size of the official library is 11K (35.3 MB / 3138 Files)
Assume we add 10015 parts (12592 - 2582) at 44K (4 times the average), we will
add 440 MB. I'll inflate this number by 25% to account for primitives and
subfiles (556 subs & prims / 2582 parts = 21% ). Therefore the amount addded in
new files is 550 MB and total including current files is (550 + 35.3) 585.3 MB.
If 585.3 MB is too large for your hard drive then it's time to get a new hard
drive. The current price on Pricewatch for a 20GB hard drive is $32 US which
isn't very much even for a teenager mowing lawns for a living.
If bandwidth is your concern, we can get around that by sending you a copy of
the library on CD.

| (...) You are right, that is no longer a problem. And the CPU(s) on any machine should render a 200k file as fast as a 10k file. The only aspect could be the up- and download time. But for a "perfect" part we shouldn't waste a thought on this. CU (...) (21 years ago, 31-Jan-04, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)

Good for downloading, good for maintaining the part, good for storing the parts library. (...) I won't argue with your figures, I (...) (21 years ago, 31-Jan-04, to lugnet.cad.dat.parts)
