How about supporting (ie, auto-activating) Polling mode with the
renderers?

How is that possible? Command-line options?

Yeah, LDLite, Ldglite, and L3Lab all have command-line options for polling.
LDLite and Ldglite use a simple -P flag.  L3Lab uses:
   -PollSilent -NoCache -DontAddToMRU -NotReusable -FromLDAO

LDAO's Editor also pushes the info through to the rendering window by
writing out two temp files.  One file holds all the code, and the other file
references the first file.  The rendering program renders the second file.
The combination of the two files allows LDAO to easily do nifty things like
modify the scale, and change the viewing angle, and only render part of the
code.
