32311:  I'm not sure if there's a standard mechanical term for arms with fixed
gears.  If there is, that'd be the way to go.  Otherwise, "Beam (size) Offset
with End Gears" would work.

Mmm, they remind me a bit to a Panama Wheel, a device for opening lock doors.
It got this name because its first use was on the locks of the Panama canal.
But I'm afraid that name isn't recognised ouside a very limited group of
specialists. How about:

32311 "Beam (size) Offset with 2 Cogged Quadrants"

Hmm, maybe.  If this part is ever modeled for LDraw, I'd have to think
about it more.

32324:  Uhh, Technic Brick 4x4 with Holes, probably.

Could we make that:

32324 "Technic Brick  4 x  4 Hollow with Holes"

Hmm.  Looking through the part library, I see the following elements with
similar large holes in their middles:

Bracket  4 x  7 x  3
Car Base  4 x  5
Cone  4 x  4 x  2 Hollow No Studs
Plate  6 x  6 Octagonal Open Center
Plate  6 x 16 with Motor Cutout
Plate 10 x 10 Octagonal Open Center
Train Base  6 x 24

Of these 7 elements, 3 names don't mention the hole, 1 specifies the hole's
purpose, 1 uses the term "Hollow", and 2 use the term "Open Center".  So
I'd rather see:

32324 Technic Brick  4 x  4 with Holes and Open Center

Placing the "Open Center" after "with Holes" increases similarity to other
Technic Brick part names.

32308:  Either a "Technic Connector Block" or "Technic Beam Fork".

I like fork, it looks like one. How about:

32308 "Technic Beam Fork with 3 Fingers"

Sure, except for the size:

Technic Beam  3 x  7 x  2 Fork with 3 Fingers

I'm also thinking it's time to rename the liftarms (especially the
full-width liftarms) to "Technic Beam".  Why?

a) 'Liftarm' is obscure, doesn't apply to all of these pieces, and
anomolishly focuses on a visually minor feature of the parts.
b) These pieces have a different geometry than the standard brick and
plate, as they are based entirely on a 20x20x20LDU system.  They should be
cleanly grouped together.

Unfortunately, many people use "beam" to refer to LDraw's "Technic Brick"
pieces.  Are there any other labels we could use?  They don't have studs,
so they're somewhat like tiles, maybe "Technic Tile Beam"? (yuck)

Hmm.

Steve

I'm glad to see some good part name thinking has come up. (...) Your term "Open Center" and the reversed order is much better than my suggestion was. I agree with this name. (...) Of course, can't do without the size. Agree. (...) [snip] (...) (...) (24 years ago, 13-Sep-00, to lugnet.cad)
