3d Studio Max is a $3000 program. It is for serious professionals. There are
hordes of plug-ins and additions that can ratchet up the price from there. It
is possible to get a student version of the program (if you are a student) for
around $800-$1000, but once you need an update, you'll have to buy the full
version. They may have changed their policies and prices since last I
checked.
