Oy, why didn't I think of this before!?!?! There's a SolidWorks-supported website where people upload models for public consumption. I put in a search for "lego" & got 309 hits. This will go a long way towards meeting my needs! (URL) (13 years ago, 22-Nov-11, to lugnet.cad)

(...) Bram- Thank you very much for your explanation. I had only a vague comprehension of this concept, & you helped solidify it. (No pun intended!) Well, 3DWin is *supposed* to be able to take .DAT files & make .IGS files out of them. (URL) haven't (...) (13 years ago, 27-Oct-11, to lugnet.cad)

| | Re: I want to put .dat files into SolidWorks

(...) The modeling strategies for Solidworks and LDraw are fundamentally different: LDraw is based on triangle meshes, and Solidworks is based on constructive solid geometry. Going from CSG to mesh is easy, but going the other way requires some AI (...) (13 years ago, 26-Oct-11, to lugnet.cad)

Some further progress. It turns out that I was able to convert a .DAT file to .STL with LDView & import it into SolidWorks, but it further turned out that, once I'd imported an .STL file into SolidWorks, I couldn't do very much with it. I can't mate (...) (13 years ago, 25-Oct-11, to lugnet.cad)

Hi- I seem to want to do something a little bit backwards relative to what most people & most converters seem to be doing... :) I'm a die-hard SolidWorks user & wish to import LDraw .dat models into SolidWorks. I'm having some trouble. Here's what (...) (13 years ago, 24-Oct-11, to lugnet.cad)

(...) AFAIK, a command-line-only version of LDView would return control back to the calling program when done, thus eliminating the need to continually poll for results. Mike (13 years ago, 27-Sep-11, to lugnet.cad)
