Tim over at The Art of Warfare (www.taw.net), gaming clan I'm a member of, we
have hd this debate of XP vs Vista since Vista came out. After a 3 month study
we are advising members to DOWNGRADE to XP on their gaming rigs espeically those
members that are on our tournament teams that compete for CASH prizes.
Vista is the only way to get Dirext X 10 but there are not enough games that
support D10 yet and those that due you *DO NOT* see a major difference in the
quality of the image of Direct 10 vs Dierect 9.
VISTA runs many of our older games slower (frame rate wise) and the newer games
have all sort of issues with VISTA as well in terms of performance.
Part of this is due to Nvidia drivers for the graphic cards still ironing out
the VISTA issues while another part is VISTA itself. Tom's Hardware recenlty
released a report that 17% of VISTA issues were MS related, 19% were NVIDIA
drivers, and 10% due to sound driver (Sound blaster) and 15% unknown.
At the end of the day, VISTA is just not strong enough for hard core gaming
(yet) and may not be at all. Based on news from the Tech Sector (Tom's
Hardware) MS is ramping up the deliver of the next OS after Vista and has
recently allowed Dell, HP, etc.. to allow users to get a VISTA machine and
DOWNGRADE to XP. So basically MS is slowly dropping VISTA as an OS. It will be
similar to Windows ME. This recent news allows MS to claim a VISTA sale and
allows the OEMs to give the customers what they want. So the best of both
worlds. MS "boost" paper sales numbers of VISTA while the rest of the wrold
waits for the next OS in late 2009. It was slated to come out in 2010 but the
timeline has been pushed up due to the mess VISTA has become.
As others have stated there are many 'features' that new timers may "think" they
need but really just get in the way! An advance user like yourself may find
some of the 'features' annoying. Also you may want to make sure that your
digital camera, printers, scanners, etc... have VISTA drivers or can be sued on
VISTA along with any old software you may be using.
Hope this helps,
Ahui
