set "Don't use Pixelbuffer" (on the right side of the dialog) it worked on my
notebook.

(...) But the dialog isn't active because this is the command line I'm talking about. Saving a snapshot from the program itself while open works fine; only on the command line does it fail. (18 years ago, 21-Oct-06, to lugnet.cad)
