"assumed" is too strong of a word. AFOLs have approached LEGO, in various ways,
about sharing resources for CAD. The primary example of this is probably the
"CAD summit" that occurred a few years ago.(1) People from the outside met with
people from the inside one weekend in New York. The community people were Tim,
Michael, Leonardo, Eric, and myself (apologies if I forgot anyone!).
As I remember, Jake had just joined the Lego Direct team at that time; it might
have even been his first week on the job...
